Installation of New Floors |
Preparing Sub FloorsPerhaps the most important aspect of the installation of your hardwood floor is the preparation of the floor’s “foundation”. Any particle board must be removed. The sub floor must be examined carefully for construction damage, such as raised nails, loose spots, soil or water damage. Also, the moisture content of the wood components of the sub floor systems must be lower than 12%. The floor surface can be applied only after the “foundation” is firm and prepared properly. Before
Choosing a Wood Type and Grade
The unique appearance of your hardwood floor is determined by the various grades of hardwood flooring available. All grades are equally strong and serviceable in any application. Flooring that is practically free of defects and made up mostly of heartwood is known as “clear” though it still may contain minor markings. “Select” is almost “clear”, but this grade contains more of the natural characteristics such as knots and color variations. The “common” grades have more markings than either of the other two grades and are often chosen because of these naturally elegant features and the character they bring to the installation.
After
Acclimation
No matter the “grade” of hardwood chosen, excessive amounts of water must be eliminated. Wood is a natural material that swells when it absorbs water and shrinks when it dries. Thus, a moisture level of 5% - 7% is ideal. If the hardwood is not within this range, it must acclimate (naturally adjust to the local humidity) before sanding and finishing. |
